Do you feel like there is not enough time in the day to get things done? Now that it gets dark by 5:00, do you feel that you can’t accomplish everything on your list? Well, you need to take time for yourself and make yourself feel good. Exercise is an excellent way to make yourself feel good and make your body look good. When you get the right amount of exercise you can increase your energy levels, and this can help improve your mood and your physique. Exercising helps your body produce endorphins; chemicals that help a person feel happier and peaceful. By choosing an exercise that you enjoy, your workout becomes easier to accomplish. Pick a workout that is best for you. I love playing sports or anything that involves being active. I have been side lined in the past year two shoulder surgeries. The activities that I normally loved doing, I physically could not do. I had to change my routine and find new activities that would help me stay fit. I have found out that I love going out for long walks around my neighborhood. I enjoy the sounds of nature and looking for the different wildlife that I could see. Challenge yourself to exercise 3-4 days a week for at least 40 minutes by doing something you enjoy. If it is riding a bicycle, running/walking on a treadmill, swimming, or even taking a long walk. Take time for yourself and take care of your body. Enjoy your workout and make it fun for yourself.

Unlike many private schools, Berwick is lucky enough to be one of the few academies that include a kindergarten through twelfth grade. While our divisional day to day existences here on the hilltop don’t necessarily overlap frequently, today is one exception. Today we are joined by our eighth grade Middle Schoolers for Berwick’s Step Up Day.

Once every fall the Upper School is excited to welcome our eighth graders into our hallways and classrooms. They start the day with the Upper School in our morning assembly. Morning announcements are made by teachers and students, and occasionally we are lucky enough to have a student performance of some kind. Today Rachel Bailey, a junior, played a Bob Dylan style tune complete with a harmonica neck rack and guitar.

This morning, as I watched the eighth graders file in, I sensed nervousness, excitement and an eagerness to partake in the Upper School world. I imagine it is an interesting change in perspective to leave one world where you lead to another where you might have to follow for some time. This morning they listened to Rachel’s voice and guitar and nervously absorbed the experience. After assembly the eighth graders were escorted to their first period and joined the Upper School for three classes of their choice.

For the past three years I have been lucky enough to share this day and my classroom with a number of eighth graders. I am always amazed at their energy and willingness. The nerves from the start of the day magically fade away when class starts. Their eyes are focused and their hands are raised. They listen and are happy to participate.

While the Upper School world is uncertain and foreign, the Berwick classroom is one they know well. I often find that they charge the classroom with their energy. Often times they do jump into leadership roles simply as a result of their enthusiasm. It is in these moments that I remember, and am grateful, for our “one school with three divisions” model. I am thankful and indebted to our Lower and Middle School teachers. I respect their hard work and am proud as well as lucky to be able to continue the work that they started.

Thursday - Athletics: How Do You De-Stress? submitted by Holly Bennett

A stressful time.

The change of seasons brings an onslaught of tasks to complete in the athletic center. I wish I had more time in the day. I know that it will all get done and my day will once again ebb and flow with my typical schedule. After rushing my children to get ready this morning in an attempt to leave my house early – a difficult task with two year old and four year old girls- my two year old said to me, “I am getting upset and sad.” This struck my heart strings and I immediately felt mother’s guilt. Then I thought about how lucky Lindsay is to be able to describe her feelings and feel confident enough to express them. I then realized how lucky I was to have a genius 2 year old who inadvertently focused my blog topic. My daughter was on her way to building her emotional I.Q.

At this time of the year in particular, stress begins to take a noticeable toll on all of us. According to a 2007 Associated Press survey school is the most commonly mentioned source of stress for children ages 13-17. Stress to some degree is beneficial. It’s that buzz that helps us get things accomplished. Essentially, good stress stimulates us. Proven in the sports arena, stress elevates performance. One can see this in action as more world records are broken during the Olympics. Good stress, or eustress, gives us an emotional challenge. It allows us to rise to the occasion- be it a test, an interview, a game winning shot, or a fight or flight situation. Researchers are finding that over the short term, stress boosts the immune system and can even shorten recovery times following surgery. However, over the longer term exposure to the stress hormone cortisol can be inhibiting and harmful. The key is to recognize the signs of prolonged stress and change unhealthy behavior patterns. As parents we must recognize when our child’s situation has crossed over from healthful to harmful. Some clues that stress has become a pattern are frequent colds or decreased ability to recover from colds, insomnia, appetite and bowel changes, back pain and headaches, forgetfulness, anxiety, and moodiness.

Parents must demonstrate the behaviors that they wish to see acted out by their children. Modeling healthy behaviors is one way for parents to help develop coping techniques for stress. An optimistic outlook can restore feelings of personal control over the situation and actually limits the production of cortisol. Allowing children to see your daily task list and announcing your sense of pleasure with accomplishments sets a tone for those watching. Follow up by helping them create priority lists and assign reasonable time limits. Exercising allows children to see parents dealing with stress in concrete ways and releases endorphins which are natural feel-good chemicals within the body. Set aside some quiet time. Make a point to tell your children that you are taking a 10 minute rest and let them see you lay down, read, listen to music, stretch, or meditate. The Nemours Foundation recommends the following tips to help kids deal with stress:

Notice out loud. Tell your child when you notice something he or she might be feeling.

Ask questions. Use phrases that encourage your child to elaborate such as “and then what happened?”

Comment briefly on the feelings you think your child was experiencing. Restate the feeling that your child is experiencing like, “no wonder you felt sad.”

Put a label on it. If your child seems angry or frustrated, use those words to help him or her learn to identify the emotions by name.

As adults we do not want to eliminate stress completely from our children’s’ lives as it provides the needed stimulus for them to achieve. However we must model coping techniques and directly intervene before the situation creates feeling of loss and lack of control. What are successful ways that your family deals with stress? Tuesday - Arts: David Coffin Visit to 4th Grade Music Classes, submitted by Stephanie Sanders

One of the many highlights of the year for 4^th grade music classes if a visit from musician, performer, David Coffin. David is a well-known performer, throughout New England. He is the Master of Ceremonies for the Cambridge Revels, is a one man show for Boston by the Sea, brings early instrument education to schools as an artist in residence, and performs solo.

David Coffin has brought his recorder and early instrument program to fourth grade students at Berwick Academy, for the past four years. He also has served as artist in residence for the lower school production.

The presentation to fourth grade students includes a history of the recorder and early wind instruments including the bombard, the gemshorn, rauschphieffe, cornamuse, racket, ocarina, voice, as well as an entire collection from the recorder family. David’s presentations are sprinkled with interesting and little known facts along with a great sense of humor.

The students always enjoy his visits. This year the student comments were; “I liked it when he made the ghost sounds on the recorder,” “The tricks he played using the organ pipes were really cool,” “He is very funny, he has a lot of wind,” “I liked it when he took us back in time,” “Wow! From getting candy to weird instruments, David Coffin’s got it all!”

David Coffin is a master educator and performer, and we are truly fortunate to be able to have him as part of our enrichment opportunities for our arts programs at Berwick Academy.

The fourth grade is fortunate to have Brad Fletcher, esteemed history teacher from the Upper School, join their classes every other week to help enhance the social studies curriculum. Brad brings his storytelling manner to class and engages the students in the teaching of early European explorers and shares stories from the colonization of America and the Revolution.

It is such an amazing opportunity for the fourth graders! His presentations evoke much excitement, conversation and thought. Brad has a way of holding their interest and making history fun and meaningful.

Participating in college athletics is a dream of many. It was certainly one of mine, and I was fortunate enough to live it. In the winter of 1989, during my senior year at North Yarmouth Academy, I was being recruited by four Division 3 coaches to attend and play hockey at their institutions. New England College showed the most interest, leading me to choose to attend the school. I visited the NEC campus once and spent time with the current hockey players. I knew nothing about the academic programs or the culture of the school. It didn't matter, I just wanted play hockey. My freshman year was typical, I sat on the bench, filmed games, and occasionally got to play. I expected this coming in, and looked forward to my sophomore year. What I didn't anticipate was that two weeks into my sophomore season I would receive a career ending neck injury. What would I do now? Hockey was all I knew at NEC. I never imagined myself not playing hockey there. What was my identity now?

My point is this, when choosing your school, imagine yourself not playing a sport there. Would you still like the school? Would it be the right fit? Fortunately, for me, it was. I was lucky because I never thought about that prior to stepping onto NEC's campus. Things happen in sports that we don't anticipate, like injuries, or being cut from the team. You should also make sure to have a conversation with your current coach to ensure that the school you plan to attend is the right fit athletically. These can be tough conversations at times, but they are essential. Only a small percentage of athletes play sports in college at any level, so make sure that you choose one that is the right match for you academically, athletically and socially, not just one of these. Use your resources here to help you figure out which one that is.

Tuesday - Arts: Thoughts About the US Play, "Arms and the Man" submitted by Director, Liz-Anne Platt

The third floor of Fogg is once more a study hall. The lighting equipment has been removed, costumes and props have been stored away. Weeks of working together, blocking scenes, agonizing over characterizations, working to perfect the timing and delivery of lines are now over, after the October 24-25 performances of George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man. What are the actors and tech crew left with? It is my hope that the cast knows how courageous and creative they have been in their interpretation of this theatrical masterpiece. It is my hope that our scenic and lighting crews are proud of the atmosphere they created that allowed for the willful suspension of belief that is vital to theatrical magic. Everyone involved in this first BA production of a Shaw play accomplished something that few theatre artists, whether in the academic or professional world are able to do: they brought the work of this witty playwright to life with style, humor and grace. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have worked with this ensemble. They are a tenacious and hardworking bunch that never lost their sense of playfulness. They have reminded me about the importance of preparation, and clarity in that preparation. They have taught all of us that the best and most moving art is informed by the perspective of one's own personal knowledge and passion. Well done! -- Liz-Anne Platt

Breathe. At this time of year in the Upper School there are times when I literally need to remind my body to breathe. It is a tumultuous and somewhat overwhelming time of year. The first quarter ended this week. Fall sports seasons are in their last weeks with winter basketball and hockey knocking on our doors. The fall play performances are this weekend. Our first coffee house was last weekend. Students have had weeks filled with classes, sports, play practice and dance and music lessons. Teachers are writing their comments and finishing grades for the first quarter. Our first 8 weeks of school always seem to fly by.

I frequently wonder how my students and colleagues are feeling around this time of year. Have we established a comfortable pace in our classrooms? Are the students feeling more adjusted to the rhythm and rhyme of their schedules? Are we seeing the beautiful fall colors that have now firmly taken over our campus? Are we remembering to breathe?

Often times at this point in the school year I take a minute to think about the quarter that is behind us now. Things I might have done well, and things that could use improvement. In the upcoming quarter my personal goal is something my father once said to the Upper School student body in a convocation speech; find the good and praise it. It is a phrase that has been running through my mind recently. I realized in my retrospection that I felt as though I didn’t offer as much praise as I wish I had. Support and guidance possibly, but I didn’t take enough moments to recognize the good I saw. I wonder why it sometimes seems easier to find flaws and make a point to correct errors than it is to simply see the good and acknowledge it. So much good happens on a daily basis on this beautiful campus.

Therefore I have made a goal for the upcoming quarter; my goal in this second quarter is to find the good and do a better job praising it. I wonder what might happen if some of you joined me in this pursuit.

For many of us, athletics are an opportunity to play a sport we love. But what motivates us to play? Why do you play? Who do you play for? Do you play for someone else's approval? Do you play for personal pride? I've often wondered the reason behind our motivation to participate in competition. I can remember growing up with two older brothers and wanting so much to be in their games; just being part of their whiffle ball, street hockey or football games was enough to make my day. As I grew older I always found myself playing in games with older kids, mostly my brothers friends. I sincerely felt that I became a good athlete quicker in my youth because of those early opportunities to compete with older kids. I was fortunate to play two sport in high school; Football and Lacrosse. These sports taught me valuable lessons but also gave me the chance to have success. The feeling of accomplishment after a hard fought game, regardless of the score. I remember distinctly as a sophomore in high school playing football and dressing for a varsity game. The game was a lopsided tilt and at the point of the game where most coaches would be clearing their benches to give the younger kids a chance to see some action. In this game our coach had not yet made a decision to substitute. Then I heard from the bleachers “put the scrubs in”, instantly I knew the voice... it was my Dad. There he was in the stands yelling at the coaches for the scrubs to be put in the game. I was picturing the other parents looking around at the Dad yelling about the “scrubs” and them wondering who's Dad is this? And his son must be a scrub! From that moment on I decided I was not going to be a “scrub”! This was my motivation! I worked hard to master my skills and perform to a level of “starter” status and went on to have a successful college lacrosse career. I often wonder how those simple words from my Dad that day; “put the scrubs in” made me dig deep inside and find that drive, that motivation to become a son who played for his Dad.

Aye, this land of yours reminds me of when me crew were sailing in the Isles of Neverland, fighting Indians, and searching for Peter, and his wretched Lost Boys. Aye, this production will be fixed, and I, and my hook, encourage all ye Berwickians to attend this magnificent production, that is after I "talk" to your Captain, of course.

Second graders are exploring math concepts using the season's most identifiable prop - pumpkins!

Among the concepts the children are investigating are weight, buoyancy, circumference, estimation of seed content, number of vertical lines, and cost per pound.

The children also have the opportunity to decorate their pumpkins and describe them with written word.

The objective is to set an individual goal that pertains to the theme of the month. Our hope is that as we embark upon the process of examining health and wellness at Berwick Academy, we will also “in act” the process by living healthier and more balanced lives.

Berwick Academy Freshman Orientation Trip

The Freshmen trip provides the initial experience for many 9th graders. The class is comprised of returning and newly enrolled students. The trip is intended to bring these different groups together and develop a cohesive class as they begin their Upper School experience.

To accomplish this goal the students started the trip at Berwick Academy's soccer field playing name games and "ice-breaker" activities. The students were then led by Upper School student volunteers on a campus tour. Visiting their classrooms and the library and dining facility. Once these groups came back they headed off to Bridgton, ME and Winona Camps.

Upon arrival, the students participated in more small-group activities, then swimming in Moose Pond at the base of Pleasant Mt. After dinner, served by the camp staff, they had larger group games and then a story by Upper School science teacher, Jon Davie.

Monday morning was a beautiful day, light breeze and bright sun. The group was warned about the swarms of bugs that had just hatched on the Saco River. So they changed plans and went canoeing for the day and returned to Winona for a second night, instead of camping on the river.
On Tuesday, the class awoke to another nice day. The students were involved in more team-challenge activities for the morning and then played some traditional games like basketball and kick-ball after lunch. The class returned at 5:00 to have pizza provided by BAPA.

Berwick Academy Student Service Trip to Guatemala

A group of Berwick Academy students recently traveled to Guatemala for a two-week service trip in the village of El Hato. The students worked closely with the children at the village school, teaching them math and writing. They also constructed a concrete surface for the children to play activities and games.

In addition to their service, the students were able to climb an active volcano, Volcan de Pacaya, visit the black sand beach, Monterrico, and go boating on Lake Atitlan. They also visited Chichicastenango and shopped in the town's famous giant market.

Berwick Academy World Explorers Camp

World Explorers Camp took place on the campus of Berwick Academy for two weeks this July. Throughout their time here, campers 'traveled' across all seven continents of the world learning about many diverse cultures. They learned games and greetings from around the world, sang songs from Australia and Africa, learned the Mexican Hat Dance and the technique of Chinese Ribbon Dancing. They participated in artistic projects such as assembling and painting model airplanes and enjoyed daily cooking sessions related to the countries they 'visited'.

BA Upper School Students Experience Art in Italy

Several Upper School students recently traveled to Italy for an art-intensive trip where they not only saw great examples of Italian art and architecture, but also had studio time in a beautiful rustic villa outside of Cortona. While in Italy, they explored the Vatican Museum, the Colliseum, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain. Students were able to experience the master works of Italian Renaissance artists at the Uffizi and the Accademia, the preparation of the Campo racetrack for Il Palio in Siena, and do some drawing, painting, and photography in the hills of Tuscany.

The BA Dance Camp offers students a variety of movement-based classes encompassing technique and composition. Last week, students explored jazz, African dance, hip-hop, musical theatre, and partnering. They also learned the tools of choreography in order to create their own group piece. Berwick Academy students have found a certain fascination with robotics. Over a period of three months, a group of self-guided upper school students built an impressive robot. The robot was to be entered into a competition this past winter, but the meet was cancelled due to snow.

Sophomore Daniel Davis said that strategy was the key to this project. “Everyone had a job, from planning to programming to construction to testing to operating.” The students enjoyed combining different visions, compromising and problem solving during the process of making the robot. Some students simply enjoyed tinkering with the mechanics of the robot. Above all, it was fun!

UPDATE:

We were very proud of the effort and enthusiasm displayed by all of our incredible second graders and their hard work certainly paid off. It is wonderful to see them express their care and concern for others, particularly as we worked to raise money for children with cleft lips and other facial deformities. Operation Smile will be delighted to receive a check from the Berwick Academy Second Grade for about $1080.00 (give or take a bit due to second grade calculations!) Little did you know that a little lemonade and a few freezepops could garner so much!

Well deserved congratulations to all second graders!

Tim Christensen '87, is exhibiting his pottery in the Jackson Library Gallery through the first week in May. Watch the video interview with Tim, and some of the discussion he had with visiting students in the Gallery. The exhibit is both thought provoking and beautiful. Our Upper School Robotics team has been very busy four days a week preparing for the Massachusetts FTC Championship on March 1st in Palmer, MA. This full day event brings teams from all over New England. Our Blog features everything SOM!
Sound of Music, that is, the classic musical being staged for production on Friday 29 Feb and Saturday 1 March at 7:00 PM in the Arts Center theater.

You don't want to miss our production under the musical direction of Seth Hurd '90. The glorious scenery is being created by Raegan Russell and her students. Costumes will be unforgettable, all hand-created by English teacher, Polly Davie. Choreography by Sasha Randall and Christine Bessett, promises to amaze.
